Today’s Friday photo is the imposing front entrance of the Church of Our Lady & St Rose of Lima.

It is locally listed at Grade A and was designed by the architect Adrian Gilbert Scott: of the famous Gilbert Scott family of architects. Two other Birmingham churches that were designed by his nephew, Richard Gilbert Scott, have featured as previous Friday photos (Our lady help of Christians, Tile cross and St Thomas More, Sheldon)

The parish of Our Lady & Saint Rose of Lima was created to cater for the new inhabitants of the Weoley Castle housing estate, which had begun to be built in 1929, creating new homes for families, the majority of which had been moved from inner city slums. After using school and parish halls for worship for a time, the growth of the parish demanded a proper church be built, and the foundation stone of Our Lady & St Rose of Lima was laid on 18th July 1959.
