New Futures for Birmingham`s Historic Buildings

Friday Photo- BCU Conservatoire

This week’s Friday Photo is of another new building- The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, as it’s now been renamed. It was founded as the Birmingham School of Music in 1886, but this building dates from 2017! I watched it being built for over a year while I worked at Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum, and when I ventured back to Millennium Point a few weeks back, I was greeted with this stunning sight. The new building houses 500 seats, and replaces the former Conservatoire which was situated in Chamberlain Square, which was recently demolished as part of the Paradise Redevelopment. It’s theĀ first, purpose-built music college to be constructed in the UK since 1987, and its Principal is Julian Lloyd-Webber! This part of the city is slowly being transformed and it’s wonderful to see it being given a new lease of life!
