Today’s Friday photo is of the Aston Tavern pub on Aston Hall Road, opposite the St Peter and St Paul church and a short walk from Aston Hall and Villa Park. The pub as it stands now was built in 1904, but lay derelict for two decades before being fully restored by its new owners. The pub website has a section on the history of the site and they explained how an Archaeological dig behind the pub in 2013 revealed the remains of the medieval village of Aston. Finds included local pottery and pitchers from the bullring. During the building works they also found the foundation stone, which stated: ‘YE OLD ASTON TAVERN; BUILT 1561. REBUILT 1891’.
