Today’s Friday photo is taken in Witton Cemetery. The cemetery opened in 1863 and was consecrated by the Bishop of Worcester in May of that year. It was the only cemetery owned by the corporation of Birmingham, until it acquired others from 1911.  Originally the size of the cemetery was 106 acres, until 1869 when 2 acres were brought to form the Birmingham Hebrew Congregation Cemetery. Witton Cemetery used to have three chapels but two were demolished in the 1980’s. The cemetery is now full and burials are only allowed for babies or in family graves.
