New Futures for Birmingham`s Historic Buildings

Friday Photo – Burne-Jones House

This week’s Friday Photo is of the Art Deco inspired Burne-Jones House situated on Bennetts Hill and the site of the former birthplace and home of one of Birmingham’s favourite sons, Sir Edward Burne-Jones, 19th-century artist. Bennetts Hill was originally created as part of the Inge Estate development, a 19th-century development which consisted of sophisticated town houses, banks and commercial properties, many of which can still be seen today. Much of the original estate no long exists, including 11 Bennetts Hill, the birthplace of Burne-Jones.

Burne-Jones’ work is on display at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and his famous stained-glass windows proudly adorn Birmingham Cathedral, just a stone’s throw from Bennetts Hill.

I always say that people don’t look up enough, including myself. It was one of the most valuable pieces of advice a lecturer gave me at university while studying Geography. Always look up, because you miss so much. In fact, if you look up at Burne-Jones House, you’ll even spot a blue plaque dedicated to him.
