New Futures for Birmingham`s Historic Buildings

Friday Photo – Unity Works

Happy New Year to all our Friday Photo followers! 2019 will hopefully be a year of more interesting photo stories from in and around Birmingham.

This week’s Friday Photo is of the Grade II-listed Unity Works, tucked away on Vittoria Street in the Jewellery Quarter, and on a stretch of road that isn’t short of history or a story or two. Built in 1866, the building was used for electroplating in the late 19th century and also die sinking and tool making in later years. It was also a former munitions factory which once supplied European and US troops during the First World War. During the war effort, the factory was under contract to Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA) and produced over one million rifles which were used by the European and American armies.

Today its future is a little less clear. Rumour has it that the building will be converted into apartments! You’ll just have to watch this space to find out more.
